Radon Water Filtration Systems

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be found in your water. Studies have found that Radon can cause serious health issues if consumed. The filter industry has long considered Aeration the most effective way for reducing Radon in water.

The Aeration Process

What is Radon

How aeration works

How aeration works

  • Radon is a radioactive gas that can dissolve into well water from surrounding soil or rock.

  • It’s odorless, colorless, and tasteless, but when released into the air (from water), it can increase indoor radon levels, which is a lung cancer risk.

Aeration removes radon by “flushing it out”: First, Water enters the aeration tank. Often a long container where water cascades down or bubbles up. Aeration removes radon by “flushing it out”: First, Water enters the aeration tank. Often a long container where water cascades down or bubbles up. Then air is mixed with the water and the system sprays water through nozzles, or bubbles air up through it. This is done to increases the surface area of water exposed to air. Radon then escapes into the air, because radon is a gas, it naturally moves from water to air (similar to carbonated soda losing bubbles when opened). Finally, ventilation removes the radon gas. The released radon is vented safely outside the building, away from indoor spaces.

Effectiveness

How aeration works

Effectiveness

  • Aeration can remove over 95–99% of radon from water, depending on the system design.

  • More effective than granular activated carbon (GAC) filters for high-radon water, especially in homes.
